3D Academy for Elementary School Children

As an extension of our Robotics/STEM outreach programs, a few robotics team members and I have partnered with a local elementary school James Bolton, to teach grade 5 students the basics of 3D printing and CAD design.

We would meet with the kids at lunch twice a week to show them how to use and design with low-level CAD programs such as TinkerCAD and GoogleSketchup. Our project-based learning program enables the kids to be creative and become comfortable visualizing and working in 3D environments.

By the end of the year, the kids had the opportunity to design and 3D print their own custom dice, monopoly pieces, and even bookmarks for their school reading fair. It is always a beautiful thing to see kids excited to learn and develop meaningful precursive skills at such a young age.
